August 14, 2025 - The Devil’s Staircase

Today's hike was up “The Devil’s Staircase”.  It sounds so ominous like it was going to be a really hard climb, but it wasn’t that bad. It turns out that the trail was named that 100 years ago because some drunk workers died on the trail on their way back from the pub.

Today was nice and cool for hiking but too foggy for what should have been a nice view at today’s high point.

Kingshouse to Kinlochleven - 9.25 miles

Starting out the highway with the hotel in the background and a big group of French hikers hot on my tail.

There were a few midges out when I stopped briefly so I got out my midge net. Also the company that makes midge repellent “Smidge” has an online midge forecast map which predicted bad midges in my area. It turned out that there were very few, but I was ready!

A whole hillside of nothing but green ferns.

There was this huge pipeline carrying water from the reservoir down to the power generating plant.

Many of the “campgrounds” have pre set up tents and pods to rent

The outflow from the power plant
