August 15, 2025 - The last day of hiking

I finished the West Highland Way today.  I’m staying the night in Fort William.  The hike was was scheduled for about 25 kilometers that I made even longer with a couple of detours

The end in Fort William

I actually started in Kinlochleven (at the end of Loch Leven) but forgot to turn on my watch gps tracking.

Steps at the end of the day.

Somebody in Kinlochleven really likes gnomes.

The air was still, damp and warm. Perfect midge weather.

No stalking on Sunday!

Even a panorama doesn’t do justice to the true view.

Today’s lunch stop. Bread, cheese, roasted chicken flavored crisps, an orange and shortbread.

Ben Nevis in the distance.

There seem to be two colors of heather. The pale purple was the most common one but occasionally there was this vivid pink too.

I took a couple mile detour to look at this stone-age fort site. It was worth it.

The fort site with Ben Nevis (4,413 ft, the tallest mountain in the British Isles) in the background.

The vitrified stone walls of the fort. At some point they got so hot that they melted together.

A panorama from the Stone Age fortress site on the tip top of an impressively steep hill.

Ft William in the distance.

The last several miles were on a road that got a bit boring so I took another detour over Cow Hill and dropped down into Ft William.

Just an interesting sign. The “GIVE “ seemed unusually large.

My last Inn on the West Highland Way.

My room was in the attic. You can just see my windows poking out of the roof.

Trying to look Scottish with my new cap.  My view out the window was Loch Linnhe (really a fjord).

A very long spacious room.

Refreshments. I used Ross’s technique of a long exposure to remove moving things (people) from the background.
